In February 2011, when Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court added a new judge, Luiz Fux made history by being the first Jewish person on the 11 member panel.
This past week, April 2011, Fux has added another achievement to his resume with affixing the first Mezuzah in the Supreme Court building.
Helping him with installing the spiritual guard on the doorpost was Rabbi Leib Rojtenberg, the new Chabad Shliach in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia.
“The Mezuzah is the first to be placed here in the Brazilian Court’s history,” an excited Rabbi Rojtenberg told COLlive.com.
Rojtenberg came to town a month before Fux, a writer and professor at prestigious universities, was nominated to the post by Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff.
Upon arriving, the Shliach and his wife Sara Rojtenberg – daughter of the first Shliach in the city Rabbi Yosef Simonowits – were quick to begin their outreach work, contacting Jewish diplomats and government employees.
They are assisting members of the local Jewish community and have begun to renovate the Mikvah in addition to giving weekly Torah classes.
