Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, founder of the Jewish community in Postville, Iowa, will be marking his 52nd birthday in the Federal Correctional Institution in Otisville, NY.
It is not clear whether he will have the ability to practice the chassidic customs for a birthday. His supporters, however, are planning to mark the 28th of Tishrei as they continue to highlight the injustice of his trial and sentence.
“It just so happens that today is also his wedding anniversary,” JusticeForSholom.org, one of the Rubashkin campaign’s websites, has revealed.
“Sadly, he has to celebrate these two special occasions in prison, all alone, when most are able to celebrate with their spouses and family.”
They asked to “Please take on a resolution in his merit and continue davening for Sholom Mordechai halevi ben Rivka. His new kapitul Tehillim is nun gimmel (53).”
Additionally, donations of $100, $75, $50, $36 or even $18 or $10 are requested for help with his ongoing legal fees. “Of course, if you can give more, please do!” they noted.
The website said contributions “would be a tremendous chizuk for him and his suffering family especially on such a special day – his birthday.”
Nearly 52,000 signatures were registared on an online petition calling on President Barack Obama to order an investigation into judicial misconduct in Rubashkin’s financial fraud trial.
47 members of Congress and influential U.S. attorneys have questioned the motives of the Judge Linda Reade who sentenced the father of 10 to 27 years in prison.
