10 years ago, a musical event was created in Crown Heights with the goal of supporting the education of Lubavitch boys and girls with special needs.
Rishe Deitsch, editor of the Nshei Chabad Newsletter, led the effort which lated turned into the fully established non-for-profit organization “Chasdei Soul II Soul Foundation.”
Tuition for a special needs child can be as high as $95,000 per year, Deitsch explained at the time and was joined by Shmuly and Tzirl Goldman who today skillfully run the organization.
“Families who struggle to ensure that their children get a Jewish education face extreme challenges and the Foundation provides much needed financial assistance,” they say.
The Soul II Soul concert, an eagerly-anticipated annual Crown Heights event, is the only fundraiser for this purpose.
Over the years, music stars such as Avraham Fried, Mordechai Ben David, Lipa Schmeltzer, Benny Friedman, Shlomo Simcha and Yossie Rose have entertained sold out audiences of Crown Heights residents who have come together for the purpose of assisting families of children with special needs.
For the past 2 years the concert hosted the finals show of “A Jewish Star” international singing competition, but this year Soul II Soul is returning to its original format of a lead singer. (A Jewish Star is moving to Brooklyn College, but its producers Yossi and Mica Soffer remain on the Soul II Soul committee, along with Yankee Teitelbaum).
This Soul II Soul 5772, the Goldmans have announced that the performer will be Yaakov Shwekey whose quick rise to stardom has filled large stadiums and auditoriums in Israel, North and South America.
“It’s his first performance in Crown Heights,” noted Shmuly Goldman, the concert’s producer. “Yaakov will be accompanied by a 21 piece orchestra and will perform some of his most popular hits as well as unique songs specifically arranged for this evening.”
The 10th anniversary concert of Soul II Soul will take place on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at The Brooklyn School for Music and Theatre on Classon Avenue in Brooklyn, NY.
Tickets will go on sale on February 1, 2012.
