As I sit devastated and saddened by the passing of my dear cousin and friend, hagaon hachosid Reb Yitzchok Zirkind ZA”L, it is hard for me to put into words the sadness and heartbreak I feel for his beloved family.
I’m not going to describe to you the great Hachnosos Orchim he and his Rebbetzin Shterna did for the thousands of guests over the years, making everyone from New York to as far away as Australia (her hometown) feel at home and like a family member.
I will not go at length into how he raised a wonderful family of children who learn and daven and cling to the derech their father showed them.
I am not going to delve into what I saw of his avodas hatefilah, what kind of yirei shamayim he was and his kiyum hamitzvos b’hidur, because this is between him and the One Above Who knows the truth.
I will not tell you how careful he was with kashrus or how he baked his own Matzah and made his own wine for Pesach.
I really do not want to talk about a person whose erlichkeit and decency knew no boundaries and that anyone who knew him could vouch for that.
And I cannot fully express how humble he was and what an example of ‘hatznei leches’ he was, making his way daily by foot on Eastern Parkway, left on New York Avenue, down to Beis Rivka on Crown Street to work as a bookkeeper in order to support his family in an honest manner.
What I did want to share with you is a few words about his knowledge and broad scope of Torah and halacha because in the opinion of many great Talmidei Chachomim, Reb Yitzchok was probably one of the few who knew the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, crystal clear from beginning to end.
He toiled over the halachas over and over, alone and with colleagues, and then he reviewed them again and again. Every diyuk, every line, every extra word the Alter Rebbe used was a Lumdes in itself.
To Reb Yitzchok, the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch was much more than just the understanding of the Din but first and foremost how the Din in Shulchan Aruch would change his actions and lifestyle as a Chabad Chossid.
His grasp of halacha came to play in hundreds of posts on Torah forums on the web which discussed all areas of Torah. Who can imagine how many sleepless nights he had, researching answers for all of those topics.
Using his famous pen name YZKD@aol.com, he caused a great kiddush Lubavitch by answering and interacting with so many Lomdim from other backgrounds and from around the world, answering shaallos and writing Divrei Torah to hundreds of people.
To have a person like this living in our community and for this tragedy to happen, the pain is truly unbearable and insurmountable. About a person like Reb Yitzchok we can understand the opinion in the Gemarah that says ‘mutav shenivra meshelo nivra’ (it is better that he was created than not).
In conclusion – although a single article will never be able to conclude such a special life – I would like just to share a very short story that happened with him on Purim this year, a few days before his passing.
During my usual round of delivering Shalach Monos, I went to the Zirkinds and found Reb Yitzchok in his usual joyous and festive mood. What was different was the hundreds and hundreds of seforim that would fill his bookshelves and were now missing.
I asked him about the empty bookshelves and he explained that the wooden shelves were getting old and were starting to break. He had packed away all the seforim but didn’t know what would be the next step.
Why couldn’t he just buy a new bookshelf? He said there is an opinion that mentions a chashash (a doubt) that the bookshelves which held seforim have some kind of kedusha in them (tashmish d’tashmish d’kedusha) so there might be a problem just throwing them out.
On Motzei Shabbos he took them down to see if he could fix them.
He passed away the next night at the age of 57. The aron that carried him to his final burial was made from those holy bookshelves…
Thank you so much for this. We all love (still do) Yitzchok OBM.
True, a single article will never be able to conclude such a special life, but it doesn’t have to.
Friends and family have taken on to learn the seforim “the 39 , Melochos” by the shabbos tish just as he did every shabbos afternoon for the past many years!
He may not be here physically, but his legacy lives on.
Please, dear reader, whoever you are, If you haven’t already added in your learning of halacha in Yitzchok’s zechus, it’s not to late to start now.
i’m thinking what a funny world we live in….
from the article it seems he could put more than a few of the younger roshei yeshivas in his back pocket in learning…
we need way more people to be kochen zich in the Alter Rebbe’s shulchan oruch like that,
so lets find these people ,let them raise awareness etc.,show the awesomeness of the Alter Rebbe,
and bichlal show and give appreciation and support to Talmiday Chachomim…
BEFORE it’s too late
חבל על דאבדין ולא משתכחין
It hurts more and more each day.
on the spot
I can honestly say that the word was a better place when you lived in it.
You will be missed. and I agree with comment 21 Es Gayt a chosid!!!!!
yahser koach
When he was born they broke the mold!!!! So Sad to see him leave us.
He was inspiring and witty and had the sense to be kind and smile to people even those who like me learned in Hadar Hatorah and my questions we not always to deap but he stood and explained me the DIN and the Mokor patiently and always with a smile
he will be missed
Thank you for sharing this beautiful heartfelt article. It has brought tears to my eyes. May Rabbi Zirkind’s family find comfort in knowing that their loved one will surely be safe and at peace in the Next world. Meanwhile, down here his legacy will live on.
Es gayt a chosid es est a chosid etc…. in every detail he was this!!!!
i remember that when i was in the chidon hamitzvos (le’harambam) RABBI ZIRKIND was the dayan, and how during the written test if you had a question he would come and help you in whatever problem you had in such a NICE and CARING manner.
YEHAI ZICHROY BORUCH
!!!
I am tearing. Thank you for writing this.
YZKD@aol.com
Thousands of posts in learning come up over years or writing.
I thing the family should put together his writings and down the line put out something Lizecher Nishmoso!!!!
that would not bend an iota from the Alter Rebbes Psakim….
What a great person CH lost and chabad in general!!!!
Chaval…
wow what a chossid!
This man was truly an amazing person.
I was once at a family wedding and saw reb yitzchok come in. I went over to say hello and asked him some questions in Halacha. He had all the time in the world for me. I was then by family members that he almost never missed a family simcha be in close or even cousins in Williamsburg he would always make a great effort to attend every simcha. We can learn learn a lot about a person from his actions even how simple they may be. May he be a source of inspiration for those who knew him to… Read more »
My thoughts and love are with the whole Zirkind family his power will always be with us may his family find some comfort to know he will bring the golous to an end may we all be strong together with respect and love for each other as he had for his family and us all.
I knew him for 20 years and his kindness and special relationship with so many people for help in Torah and Halacha will truly not be ever forgotten for the hundreds of people touched by him. I remember I once asked him for a favor to come into my house and check which doors and cubbies and rooms needs a Mezuzah and where to affix them. He spent 2 hours showing and explaining each reason why here on the right here on the left whats Hecker Tzir … what chabad shita is etc…. He spent time with me like he… Read more »
when you think of an alter chossid, he must have looked like reb yitzchok. Knowing Rabbi zirkind, he would just smile at all these comments and say now go learn for my neshomah.
I once had a question in my payment one summer I was working in Day Camp.Rabbi Zirkind was so nice about it and took his time to go through all the hours and clarify it.He did it all with such honesty and did not make me feel intitimidated at all.
wow such a special man. this story gave me the chills.
I asked him shalos for years he alsway had the time of day to answer and the cleariity of a rov to answer clear answers based on the alter rebbes psakim where applicable… May his family be consoled that for his short time in this world he was loved by so many… He is a true loss for klal yisroel!!
He was a good friend of mine and his personality will be surey missed by the hundreds who needed his aitza and answers
very touching!
reb zirkind was such a true man
I read this article at 5 am. each and every time I read about my dear friend Yitzchok, I tear up, he is gone, he was taken away from us. I am not sure if this happened because he has something important to do there, or sad to say perhaps we wasn’t deserving of a man like this in out midst. My thoughts are similar, bein odom lamokom I cant relate to, for he didnt show his true tzid’kis, but , there are many stories as with the Tzemach Tzedek, the Baal Shem Tov, and many others. that they prepared… Read more »
Amazing, wish there were more of such honest, erlich yet humble people around. Moshiach NOW!
Wow!
I was a guest at their home on many occasions. He was a man of incredible integrity and kindness. He and his incredible Rebbetzin had an open home.
Hashem i am begging you to give his family strength to survive what you have chosen for them. Show them incredible kindness. They are true examples of Ovdei Hashem. He will be missed. Thank you for sharing this story. The People of Crown Heighs were fortunate to have him in their midst.
