Turkey has turned to Israel, a country it has fiercely criticized in recent years, for humanitarian help for the earthquake victims.
More than 1,000 people were likely to have been killed in a powerful earthquake that struck October 23 in eastern Turkey.
The request for emergency housing units was transferred from the Turkish Foreign Ministry to the Israeli Embassy in Ankara, which immediately notified Israel’s Foreign Ministry, YnetNews.com reported.
Israel’s Defense Minister Ehud Barak said they will be providing aid “as soon as possible.”
Fighting broke out among Turkish earthquake survivors and anger among the destitute was directed at Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for initially rejecting aid assistance – including Israel.
The two countries were once close allies, but Erdogan has shifted his alliance to seek a wider Mideast role while harshly criticizing Israel, AP noted. Israel often sends rescue teams to world earthquake sites.
Former Israeli diplomat Alon Liel commented that “offering natural disaster aid is not something that can change the diplomatic state of affairs.”

they still want the other middle east countries to “like” them. They never will. It might temporarily soften the relations, but most likely never will make them anything more than what they are.
