Rabbi Yehuda Pink, a leading expert on Jewish Medical Ethics, spoke this week at Chabad of Liverpool Universities to a diverse crowd of Jewish students.
The event was hosted by Shluchim Rabbi Shmuli and Tzivia Brown as part of their series on Jewish Medical Ethics.
Rabbi Pink gave a fascinating lecture on euthanasia, whether one can intentionally end one’s life in order to relieve pain and suffering.
One of the case studies was about Leona Harris, who is an active senior citizen, and diagnosed with advanced gangrene of her leg. The doctors advise that the only chance of saving her life is by amputating her leg.
Leona cannot face the thought of being dependent on others and refuses the lifesaving operation. Is the hospital required to coerce her into accepting the lifesaving treatment? Jewish versus secular perspectives were discussed as well as the halachic ruling in general.
The students seized the opportunity to join in and ask a wide range of questions that had been bothering them and left them with a thirst for
more.
