The students of Cheder at the Ohel in Cambria Heights, Queens, were all tingling with excitement throughout the recent Chanukah event held for their families.
Shouts of pick me, pick me” were heard as the fascinating magician showed them all types of mystifying tricks.
They tried to figure out how he did them and what he was going to do next. The parents loved watching their children’s enthusiasm. Great fun was had by all.
After the show, all present enjoyed delicious donuts, sang Haneiros Halalu as student Mendel Shmotkin lit the menorah, heard a sicha and received chanuka gelt as well as dimes for tzedaka from the school’s director Rabbi Levi Zarchi.
The highlight of the event was when the Cheder students performed for their parents and siblings. They told the story of Chanukah, sang songs and had a lebedike, chassidishe tentzl (dance).
But the high point of the day was the performance of the 4th grade boys who had prepared an impressive play for all to enjoy.
“I think it was a beautiful idea that all the parents join together in this event as one big family,” said one mother as she mingled with the other families.
“We truly feel like Chassidim ein mishpacha.”
GO MENDEL SHMOTKIN!
