Florida has had nine consecutive years of menorah lighting at the State Capitol and Gov. Crist continued the tradition of also celebrating at the Historic Governor’s Mansion, referred to affectionately by many as “the People’s House.”
The event was attended by Governor Charlie Crist and his new wife, Tallahassee City Commissioner Allan Katz, some notable Chabad Rabbis, families representing the Florida Jewish community and its 127 Chabad Lubavitch Jewish centers throughout the state, including Rabbi Oirechman (Rabbi to Tallahassee and the Panhandle, Chabad at FSU, and key event organizer) and Rabbi Korf representing Florida Chabad.
Chabad of Tallahassee provided kosher wine, cheese, latkes, donuts, and other snacks for all to enjoy as part of the Governor’s reception. The formal part of the reception started with the Governor Crist, Rabbi Oirechman of Tallahassee, and Rabbi Biston addressing those assembled.
Crist spoke about celebrating a miracle, saying that it is, “a wonderful thing when G-d lets miracles happen.” Rabbi Oirechman spoke of the importance of sharing the Chanukah light and message, especially in these times of financial trouble and international terrorism. Then the 6-foot menorah was lit, with blessings led by 8 year old Ari Oirechman.
The Governor gave time-honored gifts of train Menorahs, dreidels, and Chocolate Gelt (Chanuka money) to the girls and boys. The Menorah lighting was followed by an impromptu Hora to the traditional “Maoz Tzur” tune by Rabbi Oreichman, Governor Charlie Crist, and other male community members. A separate circle of women also danced, including the Governor’s new bride, Carole.
