On Monday a group of high-profile rabbis will visit Sholom Rubashkin, the former CEO of Agriprocessors being held at the Dubuque County Jail. The group will then address the issues surrounding his detainment.
The rabbis will be accompanied by Rubashkin’s attorney, Guy Cook, of Des Moines law firm Grefe & Sidney, the Telegraph Herald reported.
The group includes Rabbi David Zwiebel of Agudath Israel of America, Rabbi Pesach Lerner of National Council of Young Israel, Rabbi Yaakov Wasser of Rabbinical Council of America, Rabbi Gershon Tannenbaum of Rabbinical Alliance of America / Igud Horabbonim, Rabbi Moshe Elefant of the Orthodox Union and Rabbi Shimon Hecht of NCFJE.
Rubashkin is being held on federal charges of harboring illegal immigrants, document fraud, identity theft and bank fraud. Rubashkin was denied bail on Dec. 22.
Federal authorities argue that Rubashkin poses a flight risk, in part because of the Law of Return — Israeli legislation enacted in 1950 that gives Jews and those of Jewish ancestry, as well as their spouses, the right to migrate to and settle in Israel and gain citizenship. Rubashkin’s supporters say the argument is unjust.
The former CEO presided over a kosher meatpacking company that was the subject of one of the biggest immigration busts in U.S. history.
