In preparation for this week’s Shabbos email – A photo shoot in Times Square, NY. Onlookers gathered wondering just what I was doing with a camera, tripod, flash strobes, a menorah and candles?

Even the New York City Police took interest, especially when I repeatedly tried to light the candles against the strong winter winds.

In Times Square there is light of all colors bouncing everywhere. This made the shoot – with a Nikon SB800 Flash – both challenging and fun!

Of most important was to balance the ambient (which is really artificial) light with the flash light.

This week’s message:

Chanukah commemorates a spiritual battle.
The Greeks fought to make Judaism a culture and void of G-dliness.
Lighting the menorah is our battle emblem – the victory of light over darkness.

Behind the message:

The Greeks were determined to remove G-d from Judaism. They demanded, “Keep your books and your Torah, but remove the concept of a higher reality.”

The military victory against the Greeks was a miracle that preceded and made possible the lighting of the menorah in the Temple. This light symbolizes the essence of the battle and the victory of spirituality over darkness!
