Congressman Gary Peters of Michigan met Friday with West Bloomfield Shliach Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg to discuss the injustice to Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin.
Rabbi Silberberg called to schedule the meeting at the Congressman’s district office but Peters insisted on coming to meet at the Bais Chabad Torah Center of West Bloomfield.
At the meeting, Silberberg delivered a presentation on the background of the criminal case, the viciousness of the prosecution and the new evidence that shows a strong bias on the part of Judge Linda Reade.
“Congressman Peters had never heard of the Rubashkin case at all and he expressed outrage at the way the case was handled,” Silberberg told COLlive.com.
Peters, a Democrat, agreed to contact the office of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder at the Department of Justice to express his concern, and the concerns of his constituents, regarding the case.
The Congressman also took a tour of the Bais Chabad and he expressed his support for the community and the wonderful work at the Bais Chabad.
“The message here,” exclaimed Rabbi Silberberg, “is that we Shluchim assume that everyone knows about the Rubashkin case. However, the fact is that many politicians are completely unaware of the case.
“This year, being an election year, presents a unique opportunity for Shluchim to contact their local politicians and exert influence on the Department of Justice,” he added.
At a recent speech to Agudath Israel, New York Congressman Anthony Weiner said he was “extremely troubled and concerned with the injustice going on.”
To date, Lubavitch Headquarters’ organizations have not publicly responded on the Rubashkin case, although some officials have lobbied privately.
Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch officials Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky has mentioned Rubashkin at the last International Kinus Hashluchim in New York and Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky has signed a letter calling to write letters of support.
