By the Deren family
Sitting here in the Intensive Care Unit of New York University Hospital, anticipating Hashem’s help and mercy in a miraculous complete recovery for our son, Menachem Mendel HaKohen ben Shifra Aviva, we are acutely aware of the heartfelt good wishes being directed our way (and tefilot directed heavenward), for which we are deeply grateful.
“Is there anything we can do?” is the question that keeps coming to us, directly and indirectly, from so many.
And the answer, truthfully, is – You bet there is!
We don’t for a minute believe that things are supposed to be this way. In King David’s words – “Ad Mosai?” – “Until When?”
The Rebbe taught us that Hashem actually wants us to ask that of Him, that we forcefully demand that He put an end to all the terrible suffering in this world.
And that we are meant to be active participants in making that happen.
We all know what we want – a world of good, of kindness, of happiness and health. But we need to “prime the pump”, by doing the good things, the kind things, that define a good world.
One mitzva, another mitzva. Maimonides says every single one of us needs to understand that WE are the one to do THE mitzva that will tip the balance.
When Mendel was born he was unusually small and I wrote to the Rebbe, expressing concern. The Rebbe’s answer was ויקוים בו זה הקטן גדול יהי’ “v’yikoyam boi zeh hakatan gadol yihiyeh” – “In him will be fulfilled” [the words that are part of the bris blessings] “this little one will become big”.
We are humbled and grateful for all of Hashem’s many many blessings, large and small, that we’ve received through the years until now. But we, all of us, need so many more.
Please help us reach for bigger and for more, for a complete and speedy recovery for Menachem Mendel HaKohen ben Shifra Aviva, b’soch kol cholei Yisrael, along with all who need Hashem’s blessings for healing.
Please, together, let’s cry out to Hashem – “ad mosai”? Our hearts are shouting – let’s shout with our actions along with our words. Loud actions, bigger than what we have done until now. Please undertake another mitzvah, a mitzvah of your choice, on behalf of our son. Please help us storm the Gates of Heaven for Mendel and for everyone.
And may Hashem answer our prayers and heal our whole world with Moshiach, Now.

MAin thing is we want to be there for your family as well as Menachem Mendel haCohen. The update gives us more impetus to keep it in mind. And we also appreciate family’s brachas for our situations. ACHTUS B’AHAVAS YISRAEL!!
Thanks to the Tefilois, and Ma’asim Toivim of so many -there has been an improvement in Mendel’s שי condition.
We ask that everyone continue in his zchus – in the zchus of לוי יצחק בן צירל and in the zchus of all of our brothers and sisters who need a רפואה and ישועה.
What happened? Is he okay? I really think when we know what is wrong we can direct our prayers to the area in a more concentrated way. So if someone could let us know, it would help. Thank you so much and yes, could you please let us know what kapital it would be? (surely that is not private too…..)
Ahavas Yesroel would help more.

#12 asks, “Would you daven differently if you knew what was the matter?” The answer is yes, for many of us. Yes, we daven differently if we know that the Chabad house in Mumbai is under siege, that a child was in a fire, that someone was in a car accident.
The more specific, yes, the more heartfelt. Though that doesn’t mean people must share information.
And always, always, it is proper to give updates. If you ask me to daven, give me updates about the person’s condition!
Though you are right.
You should assume the question comes out of care.
My Kitah says his name every day after saying rebbes Kap’!!
We have a list…….thats much too long…….Oy hashem please

may we hear good news with Menachem Mendel HaKohen ben Shifra Aviva ASAP. My tfillos are with you.
Friend from Toronto
I agree with number 12
thank you for posting
To #7 and #10: What in heaven’s name is it your business to learn “what’s wrong with him” ??? I don’t know and it makes no difference. If the family wanted to share medical notes, they would have included them in their article. Unless you’re a specialist in the field of medicine they are dealing with, and they’ve approached you themselves , what can your knowledge of his situation possibly add, except to satisfy your curiosity?
Forget the detals, just go DAVEN. Would you daven differently if you knew what was the matter?
the rebbe is with you and community is with you
how old is he??
can some one please share what happened to him may he have a speedy recovery right now.
what is his kapitel???
may mendel have a refuah shelaima right now
